Excuse me if, instead of musing, I climb aboard my soapbox a bit.
We are being taught, in Paul’s lexicon, about God’s wrath on unrighteousness.
The first complaint I see is that people were suppressing truth (Rom 1:18).
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
This was due to the human race shining God on (Rom 1:21).
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

[They] exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
In response, God said, “OK, you want to play with fire, go ahead.” (
Rom 1:24)
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves
And the results were (Rom 1:25):
…[they] served the creature rather than the Creator…
