From learner to sent

Updated: May 11

Forgive me for jumping backwards but I keep slowly reading and rereading the opening chapters of Romans. Allow me to add some background detail.

Last night as I prepared for our teen Bible study (Veronica and I and the “other" teens!), I was reading Mark 6. In verse 7, Jesus sends out “the twelve.” When they returned from proclaiming repentance, casting out demons, and healing the sick (6.12-13), Mark calls them apostles (6.30), which means,“sent out ones”.

Previously they were disciples (Mk 3.7), which, stated simply, is “learners”. They went from being “learners” to being “sent out ones.” In my notes I jotted down to tell the teens that the closest word we have to apostle today is missionary.

Nothing too new or radical there.
