Daughters of Sarah

1 Peter 3.6b says:

And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

Pedro is telling the ladies that they are daughters of Sarah, on two conditions:

  • First, that they do good.

  • Second, that they do not “fear anything that is frightening.” [NVI]

No scaredy-cat ladies in Sarah’s family, huh?

Let’s try some other versions for that second part, just to see if we can clear this up:

  • and are not afraid with any amazement [KJV]

  • without being frightened by any fear [NASV]

  • and do not give way to fear [NIV]

  • and are not put in fear by any terror [ASV]

  • do not succumb to fear [The Complete Jewish Bible]

After reading all those translations, my response remains the same.

I just don't get it.
