Recently, before heading off to the Seminary to teach my weekly class, we received bittersweet news. Our dear sister-in-law Mavis, a devoted follower of Jesus, had stepped into eternity.
We quickly arranged flights to Minnesota and then I set off to class. When I arrived, I shared the news with my students, telling them I had two pieces of great news to share.
“First,” I said,“ Mavis is in heaven. She’s having an excellent day—better than any of us here.”
Naturally, they wanted to know the second piece of happy news.
“Veronica and I will be traveling to Minnesota to be with our family, so there will be no class next week.”
Their response? A chorus of boos! I couldn’t help but laugh. While my day wasn’t quite as good as Mavis’s, it was still a good one.
In Minnesota, we arrived just in time to catch the tail end of autumn before it gave way to a fresh blanket of snow. The beauty of the changing seasons was a poignant reminder of God’s creation and faithfulness.
